Summers are getting hotter. As we’ve just experienced, hot days are no longer a rarity; they’re becoming the new normal, even in Switzerland. This is also changing our understanding of quality of life. Today, in addition to a pool and climate-controlled interiors, something else is taking center stage: a well-planned garden.
A garden does more than just enhance a property. It expands living space, improves the microclimate, and enhances the quality of outdoor living. It creates places of retreat, naturally cools its surroundings, and makes the outdoor area a place where people enjoy spending time, even on hot summer days.
The effect of trees is particularly impressive. Measurements show that it can be up to ten degrees cooler under a tree canopy than under a conventional umbrella or fabric awning. A tree actively cools its surroundings through evaporation and air circulation. A well-established tree is therefore more than just a design element. It provides shade, improves air quality, sequesters CO₂, and creates habitat for numerous animal species. At the same time, a mature garden enhances living comfort and often increases the value of a property.
There is currently an intense debate in Switzerland about providing stronger legal protection for old trees. Regardless of political initiatives, however, every site is different. Whether a large tree is a good fit depends on the available space, neighboring properties, light conditions, and how the garden is used. Careful planning therefore remains crucial. While not every tree is suitable for every property, almost every property offers space for climate-adapted greenery.
While houses are regularly renovated or modernized, a garden continues to evolve over the years. Trees grow, perennials come into their own, and the microclimate steadily improves. A carefully planned garden is therefore much more than just a design investment: it creates a living space that gains in quality, character, and value over time.
Be sure to also consider the value of your garden. A well-established garden is much more than just a beautiful setting; it can have a significant impact on the appeal and market value of your property.
