As working in a private household is very different from working in a company, we require at least 3-5 years of experience in exclusive private households, supported by appropriate references. Depending on the profile, very specific specialist knowledge is required, for some of which a corresponding education is a prerequisite, such as for facility manager positions.

The requirements for these positions vary considerably depending on the employer. However, in addition to professional experience, the focus is on a precise and efficient way of working as well as a discreet manner and absolute confidentiality. Modern building services are also becoming increasingly important, particularly with regard to the management and safeguarding of art collections within the building. Private assistance with travel arrangements is also becoming increasingly important in order to meet the highest demands.

There is no traditional history of butlers in Switzerland, but we are observing a clear trend: the butler profession is once again in demand, and the range of tasks is constantly growing. At the same time, the demand for qualified housekeepers remains high. The former shame of employing domestic staff has disappeared – it is no longer considered elitist or frowned upon. With the increasing internationalization of Switzerland due to many newcomers, households and their needs are also changing. Our recruitment process is based on an individual and personal approach to ensure that the personalities of our clients and personnel harmonize optimally. The basic expectations in the luxury segment have remained largely constant, but we are seeing a noticeable change in the quality of communication and personnel management. Employers’ wishes can be extraordinary, and our job is to find solutions and make the seemingly impossible possible. Open and clear communication is crucial in order to reach a sensible consensus together. Whether exclusive events, special requests or creative challenges – every day brings new surprises that make this profession so unique and exciting.

What special skills or knowledge have you acquired in the course of your career that you would not have expected before?
There are many requirements in the job of a butler or personal assistant that are not obvious at first glance. These are particularly crucial:

Extreme resilience – always act professionally and efficiently, even under high pressure.
Quick reactions – find the best solution at lightning speed in unforeseen situations.

How does a personal assistant deal with constantly being “on call”? Is there even an end to working hours?
There is also a certain daily structure as a butler or personal assistant – but this is far more flexible than in a traditional office job. The reality is that you are often “on call” and have to be prepared for plans to change at short notice.

Recognize the employer’s needs – If you work and organize with foresight, you can minimize many spontaneous requests.

It is certainly an advantage if you know the invited guests and their needs and also take enough time to discuss and prepare the evening together with the staff. The biggest stumbling blocks are often too few staff, unforeseen special requests and significantly more guests than advertised. 

As the person responsible for dinner parties, a well-chosen wardrobe is also essential.

In this profession, it is essential not to be swayed by your own values and to earn the trust of employers through discretion and professionalism.
