Location

Meilen, the main administrative town for the District of Meilen, is resplendent with vineyards (and equally magnificent wines). Situated on the sunny right banks of Lake Zurich at the midpoint between Zurich and Rapperswil, Meilen is just 15 kilometers away from the city. The popular community has roughly 12,500 inhabitants.

Public transportation

The S6 and S7 S-Bahn lines get you into Zurich-Stadelhofen in 10 minutes. Zurich-Bellevue is just a 15 to 20 minute commute by car (under normal traffic flow conditions). The S7 line connects Meilen to Rapperswil in 25 minutes. In the blink of an eye, the Lake Zurich ferry from Meilen to Horgen links the towns on the left banks of the Lake, and the autobahn connections toward Chur and Gotthard. Meilen maintains a good bus network that travels around the various districts and neighborhood communities of Herrliberg, Männedorf and Stäfa.

Shopping

Meilen has an extensive infrastructure with a great selection of shops for everyday needs, boutiques, apothecaries, gift stores and much more. Train ticket office, post office, banks, insurance companies and travel agencies offer their services as well.

Schools

The Meilen School is located in Feldmeilen, while Allmend and Obermeilen each have a school campus with a kindergarten and a primary school. In addition, the municipality’s school system includes the Allmend Secondary School, which offers a special pedagogical program.  The community has various music schools, from which emerged the Jugendmusikschule Pfannenstiel JMP (Pfannenstiel Music School for Youth).

Recreation

Meilen has a virtually inexhaustible range of recreational and cultural activities, with its public beaches, the indoor pool, an extensive array of clubs and associations, gorgeous hiking trails – and it is the proud home to an ultramodern athletic facility in a wonderful location on the Allmend plateau. Its offerings extend from a triple gymnasium to outdoor facilities, with grass playing fields, an all-weather pitch, tennis courts, cross-country track and beach volleyball facility. Other recreational alternatives include the Meilen Symphony Orchestra, the oldest amateur formation in Switzerland, which invites amateur musicians with advanced skills to join in.

Hotels/restaurants

When it comes to gastronomy, Meilen has everything – from cozy lakeside restaurants and quaint traditional-style village taverns to paragons of gourmet dining. Restaurants like the “Löwen”, the “Thai Orchid”, and the “Hotel Hirschen” located directly on the Lake, and beautiful excursion destinations in the middle of nature, such as the “Obere Pfannenstiel” or the “Alpenblick Toggwil”, which invite you to relax and enjoy. A further selection of restaurants is located at the center of the town.

Sites/culture

The Reformed Church of Meilen; the “Löwen” – Meilen’s oldest tavern; the 200 year-old “Zürichseehaus” tavern & inn; the “Seehof”; Meilen Town Museum.
