With just over 200 inhabitants, Madulain is the smallest community of the Upper Engadine. But for those seeking peace and tranquillity it is the largest. Although only ten kilometres away from the sophisticated St. Moritz, the village unites everything that makes a typical Carigiet idyll: the typical Engadine houses with their thick, sgraffiti-painted walls, a listed church and the castle ruins of Guerdaval from the 13th century warm themselves in the sun, which often shines more often than average here.

Location

Madulain is located at 1697 m above sea level in the high valley of the Upper Engadine between La Punt Chamues-ch and Zuoz. The municipality also includes the exclave Val Prünella and the associated alp Prünella, which can be reached both from La Punt Chamues-ch and from the scenic Val Chamuera.

How to get here

Madulain's lovely station is located on the Rhaetian Railway's Landquart-Samedan line. If you want to get off at this dreamy stop, press the stop button - otherwise the train will pass by.

Madulain can be reached by car from Landquart via Davos, Flüela Pass, Susch, Zernez and Zuoz, from Chur via Tiefencastel, Julier Pass, Silvaplana and St. Moritz. In summer, a trip over the beautiful Albula Pass is worthwhile. From Klosters to Lavin there is the possibility of car transport through the Vereina tunnel.

Restaurants and hotels

In Madulain, guests stay in the only hotel in the municipality, the Chesa Stüva Colani, a 17th century 4-star house that has been elegantly and comfortably restored. Of course, in the surrounding communities between La Punt Chamues-ch and Zernez there are many more accommodations of different price ranges and an abundance of restaurants with mainly Swiss and Italian cuisine, but also all kinds of exotic with high standards.

Schools

Madulain children attend school in the neighbouring village of Zuoz. The school language is Puter, the local dialect of Romansh, up to the upper school level. German is introduced from the 4th primary class onwards, and French, English and Italian are offered as foreign languages in the upper school. Local playgroups are run privately.

Shopping

The nearest shops are "Volg"-shops in Zuoz or La Punt Chamues-ch.

Sports and leasure activities

Summer

Cosy walks in the valley, for example along the renaturalized Inn, a mountain hike to the lodge "Es Cha" with its impressive view directly below Piz Kesch, horse rides through the idyllic landscape of La Plaiv, a game of golf in nearby Zuoz; in summer Madulain offers the perfect backdrop above all for those sporty people who seek peace and privacy. The cosy campsite offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

Winter

Madulain is directly connected to the Engadine cross-country trails and even offers a dog trail as a special feature. A variety of winter hiking trails, a three-kilometer-long toboggan run and even a small ice rink for skating distract residents and guests alike.  The famous ski slopes around St. Moritz are within easy reach by train, bus or car.

Climate

Situated on the southern hillside of the Alps, the valley is wide open towards the sun and allows intensive warming. The Maloja wind, which blows when the weather is fine, ensures that the heat never becomes oppressive even in summer. The air is thin and poor in allergens, which, together with the mild climate and the scenic charm, make it ideal retreat conditions.
