“MuKEn” is neither a new child’s name nor an Asian tribe. But it could soon affect your heating system. On January 1, 2018, the new federal energy law MuKEn with regulations in the building sector came into force. Although the implementation of the cantonal provisions in the canton of Zurich is still in the parliamentary phase, it is assumed that the current regulations will soon be replaced by the new ones. While this could mean that new buildings will be required to generate their own electricity, the focus for older buildings will be on replacing fossil fuel heating systems. In future, at least 10% renewable energy is to be used for heat generation or compensated for by increasing efficiency (e.g. through additional thermal insulation). Although oil and gas heating systems will not be banned, they can no longer be replaced without additional expense. The replacement of oil and gas heating systems will then become more expensive and more complex than is (still) the case today.
